Fried Cabbage

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

This is a recipe that I saw my father make many times. This is basically a stir fry which maintains the texture of the cabbage. He has made a lot of vegetables in this manner and it's part of the reason why I learned to stop hating them. It's not that the vegetables were inherently disgusting but they were overcooked, under seasoned or both. This method can be used with any variety of vegetables but since cabbage is one of my favorite things to eat this is the recipe I'm sharing.

Ingredients

1 Head of Cabbage - chopped

1 Purple Onion - chopped

1 Green Bell Pepper - chopped

1 Red Bell Pepper - chopped

1/4 cup Vegetable oil

1 tbsp. Salt

2 tsp. Garlic powder

2 tsp. Onion powder

2 tsp. Oregano

2 tsp. Sage

2 tsp. Smoked Paprika

1/2 cup water or chicken broth

Instructions

1. Chop cabbage into 1 inch pieces and set aside.

2. Chop onion and bell peppers into 1 inch pieces and set aside.

3. Heat frying pan on medium high.

4. Add oil to preheated frying pan and then add onion and bell peppers.

5. Stir until vegetables are fully coated in oil.

6. Add salt, garlic powder, oregano, sage, and smoked paprika and then stir until fully mixed.

7. Continue stirring constantly until vegetable being to brown.

8. Add cabbage and stir until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.

9. Constantly stir until cabbage has browned and has softened but yet still has some firmness.

10 .Add water or chicken broth to pan and then stir to fully deglaze the contents at the bottom of the pan.

This will yield a rather firm texture from the vegetables as this is basically a stir fry. If you’d like to have a softer texture cover and cook for an additional 20 to 30 minutes.
